HER HAIR WAS UP IN A PONYTAIL

HER FAVORITE DRESS TIED WITH A BOW

TODAY WAS DADDY'S DAY AT SCHOOL

AND SHE COULDN'T WAIT TO GO

BUT HER MOMMY TRIED TO TELL HER,

THAT SHE PROBABLY SHOULD STAY AT HOME.

WHY THE KIDS MIGHT NOT UNDERSTAND,

IF SHE WENT TO SCHOOL ALONE.

BUT SHE WAS NOT AFRAID;

SHE KNEW JUST WHAT TO SAY.

WHAT TO TELL HER CLASSMATES

OF WHY HE WASN'T HERE TODAY.

BUT STILL HER MOTHER WORRIED,

FOR HER TO FACE THIS DAY ALONE.

AND THAT SHE WAS WHY ONCE AGAIN,

SHE TRIED TO KEEP HER DAUGHTER HOME.

BUT THE LITTLE GIRL WENT TO SCHOOL,

EAGER TO TELL THEM ALL.

ABOUT A DAD SHE NEVER SEES

A DAD WHO NEVER CALLS.

THERE WERE DADDIES ALONG THE WALL IN THE BACK,

FOR EVERYONE TO MEET.

CHILDREN SQUIRMING IMPATIENTLY,

ANXIOUS IN THEIR SEATS.

ONE BY ONE THE TEACHER CALLED,

A STUDENT FROM THE CLASS.

TO INTRODUCE THEIR DADDY,

AS SECONDS SLOWLY PASSED.

AT LAST THE TEACHER CALLED HER NAME,

EVERY CHILD TURNED TO STARE.

EACH OF THEM WAS SEARCHING,

FOR A MAN WHO WASN'T THERE.

"WHERE'S HER DADDY AT?"

SHE HEARD A BOY CALL OUT.

"SHE PROBABLY DOESN'T HAVE ONE"

ANOTHER STUDENT DARED TO SHOUT.

AND FROM SOMEWHERE NEAR THE BACK,

SHE HEARD A DADDY SAY,

"LOOKS LIKE ANOTHER DEAD BEAT DAD,

TOO BUSY TO WASTE HIS DAY."

THE WORDS DID NOT OFFEND HER,

AS SHE SMILED UP AT HER MOM.

AND LOOKED BACK AT HER TEACHER,

WHO TOLD HER TO GO ON.

AND WITH HANDS BEHIND HER BACK,

SLOWLY SHE BEGAN TO SPEAK.

AND OUT FROM THE MOUTH OF A CHILD,

CAME WORDS INCREDIBLY UNIQUE.

"MY DADDY COULDN'T BE HERE,

BECAUSE HE LIVES SO FAR AWAY.

BUT I KNOW HE WISHES HE COULD BE,

SINCE THIS IS SUCH A SPECIAL DAY.

AND THOUGH YOU CANNOT MEET HIM,

I WANTED YOU TO KNOW.

ALL ABOUT MY DADDY,

AND HOW HE LOVES ME SO.

HE LOVED TO TELL ME STORIES

HE TAUGHT ME TO RIDE MY BIKE.

HE SURPRISED ME WITH PINK ROSES,

AND TAUGHT ME TO FLY A KITE.

Submitted by Karen Cunningham

WE USED TO SHARE FUDGE SUNDAES,

AND ICE CREAM IN A CONE.

AND ALTHOUGH YOU CANNOT SEE HIM,

I'M NOT STANDING HERE ALONE.

"CAUSE MY DADDY'S ALWAYS WITH ME,

EVEN THOUGH WE ARE APART

I KNOW BECAUSE HE TOLD ME

HE'LL BE FOREVER IN MY HEART.

WITH THAT HER LITTLE HAND REACHED UP,

AND LAY ACROSS HER CHEST.

FEELING HER OWN HEARTBEAT,

BENEATH HER FAVORITE DRESS.

AND FROM SOMEWHERE IN THE CROWD OF DADS,

HER MOTHER STOOD IN TEARS.

PROUDLY WATCHING HER DAUGHTER,

WHO WAS WISE BEYOND HER YEARS.

FOR SHE STOOD UP FOR THE LOVE

OF A MAN NOT IN HER LIFE.

DOING WHAT WAS BEST FOR HER

DOING WHAT WAS RIGHT.

AND WHEN SHE DROPPED HER HAND BACK DOWN,

STARING STRAIGHT INTO THE CROWD,

SHE FINISHED WITH A VOICE SO SOFT,

BUT IT’S MESSAGE CLEAR AND LOUD.

"I LOVE MY DADDY VERY MUCH"

HES MY SHINING STAR.

AND IF HE COULD HE'D BE HERE

BUT HEAVENS JUST TO FAR.

YOU SEE HE WAS A FIREMAN

AND HE DIED JUST LAST YEAR

WHEN AIRPLANES HIT THE TOWERS

AND TAUGHT AMERICANS TO FEAR.

BUT SOMETIMES WHEN I CLOSE MY EYES,

ITS LIKE HE NEVER WENT AWAY.

AND THEN SHE CLOSED HER EYES,

AND SAW HIM THERE THAT DAY.

AND TO HER MOTHERS AMAZEMENT,

SHE WITNESSED WITH SURPRISE.

A ROOM FULL OF DADDIES AND CHILDREN

ALL STARTING TO CLOSE THEIR EYES.

WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY SAW BEFORE THEM

WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY FELT INSIDE.

PERHAPS FOR MERELY A SECOND,

THEY SAW HIM AT HER SIDE.

"I KNOW YOU'RE WITH ME DADDY"

TO THE SILENCE SHE CALLED OUT.

AND WHAT HAPPENED NEXT MADE BELIEVERS

OF THOSE ONCE FILLED WITH DOUBT.

NOT ONE IN THE ROOM COULD EXPLAIN IT

FOR EACH OF THEIR EYES HAD BEEN CLOSED.

BUT THERE ON THE DESK BESIDE HER,

WAS A FRAGRANT LONG STEMMED PINK ROSE.

AND A CHILD WAS BLESSED. IF ONLY FOR A MOMENT,

BY THE LOVE OF A SHINING BRIGHT STAR.

AND GIVEN THE GIFT OF BELIEVING,

THAT HEAVEN IS NEVER TOO FAR.

THEY SAY IT TAKES A MINUTE TO FIND A SPECIAL PERSON, AN HOUR TO APPRECIATE THEM, A DAY TO LOVE THEM, BUT THEN AN ENTIRE LIFE TO

FORGET THEM.

YOU ANSWERED YOUR LAST CALL
(Dedicated to the brave NYC firefighters who gave their lives

in the line of duty September 11, 2001 at the World Trade disaster)

I remember the alarm on that fateful day, as we responded in haste, to be carried away.
With sirens screaming our advancing pace, we answered the call by taking our place.
We have answered this call many times before, you see it's our job, we expect no less, no more.
We know the danger that comes with the quest, but we answered that call, by doing our best.

We are armed with the weapons of life saving gear, the voices of so many, calling us near.
Then we arrive at this god-awful sight, the towers ablaze, no time for fear, just fight.
This was an act of evil, so many souls could be lost, we must strive to save as many, at whatever the cost.
Into the lobby, and then down the hall, I rush up the steps, to answer the call.

My heart is now pounding, the sweat pours down my face, but I keep moving at a life saving pace.
Shouting out orders as I continue my quest, "GET DOWN, KEEP MOVING!" I shout,
"PLEASE GOD! ……HELP ME!" ………. I'm doing my best.

Then all at once I hear a thunderous roar from above, my life flashes before me, images of those who I love.
Then, out of nowhere I am led by the hand, by this unknown person, who is this man?
He carried me out of this inferno from hell, as he lifted my soul, just when everything fell.

Now I am at peace, just comfort no-pain, who is this man who offered his hand when my tears fell like rain?
I now stand before this bright heavenly light, to raise my head and ask, who is this man who came to my plight?

Then I hear a voice from above, as my eyes roam, "My Son do not fear, for he has taken you home."
"He's just like you, you see he answered My call, he was just doing his job, giving his all."
"His boots and his helmet were supplied from above, and his power and strength came from those whom you love."
"You see, even up here when the alarm bell rings, they answer your call these firefighters with wings."
"He carried you away from that horrible place, when you cried out to Me, for my love and my grace."
"Your mission is over my Son, you answered your last call, you saved so many lives, walk tall and be proud."
"My Son, take My hand and walk into the light, and dwell with Me forever in GOD'S heavenly might."

A Firefighter's Pledge

I promise concern for others.
A willingness to help all those in need.
Promise courage - courage to face and conquer my fears.
Courage to share and endure the ordeal of those who need me.

I promise strength - strength of heart to bear

whatever burdens might be placed upon me.
Strength of body to deliver to safety

all those placed within my care.

I promise the wisdom to lead,

the compassion to comfort,
and the love to serve unselfishly

whenever I am called.

A Firefighter's Prayer

When I am called to duty, God,

wherever flames may rage,
Give me the strength to save some life

whatever be its age.

Help me embrace a little child

before it is too late,

or save an older person

from the horror of that fate.

Enable me to be alert

and hear the weakest shout,

and quickly and efficiently
put the fire out.

I want to fill my calling

and to give the best in me,
to guard my every neighbor

and protect his property.

And if according to my fate

I am to lose my life this day,
Please bless with your protecting

hand my family this I pray.

What is a fireman?

He is the guy next door - a man's man with the memory of a little boy.

He has never gotten over the excitement of engines and sirens and danger.

He is a guy like you and me with wants and worries and unfulfilled dreams.

Yet he stands taller than most of us.

He is a fireman.

He puts it all on the line when the bell rings.

A fireman is at once the most fortunate and the least fortunate of men.

He is a man who saves lives because he has seen too much death.

He is a gentle man because he has seen the awesome power of violence out of control.

He is responsive to a child's laughter because his arms have held too many small bodies that will never laugh again.

He is a man who appreciates the simple pleasures of life - hot coffee held in numb, unbending fingers

- a warm bed for bone and muscle compelled beyond feeling - the camaraderie of brave men

- the divine peace and selfless service of a job well done in the name of all men.

He doesn't wear buttons or wave flags or shout obscenities.

When he marches, it is to honor a fallen comrade.

He doesn't preach the brotherhood of man.

He lives it.

A Firefighter's Tears

The alarm rang, as it had so many times before.

He was the first of the firefighters up and out,

Awakened from his bed at the station

By the clanging of the bell.

Engine 12 pulled out of the hall,

Dispatch paged another station.

And all the firemen aboard the truck

Were tensed with anticipation

" It's gonna be a nice 'un, boys,"

He said as he donned his gear.

And the young bucks smiled at him

As they drew ever near.

They turned onto his own street

And he could see the fire's work

He hoped their mother woke his kids

To see their dad at work.

His heart sank as he saw the home

That he so dearly loved

Going up in Smoke and Flames

As he donned his gloves.

Aggressively he hit the fire

And searched the rooms above.

And with a flare of personal vengeance

He saved what remained of his home.

As he left the world of flaming hell

He saw his little girl

He ran quickly to her side and said,

"Honey, Daddy's here."

He would never forget what next she said:

As he held her close,

"I love you, Daddy," she whimpered,

And he began to weep.

She died in his arms that night...

The others, later on....

His comrades gave him their respects

but his Family was gone.

He sits alone at the station, now,

There's no more spring in his step.

He stays detached from his fellows

to avoid once again being hurt.

He risks it all in fires, now,

No more concerns for his safety.

He has taken a solemn vow.

He won't let it happen to another,

as long as he's around.

Firefighter

He steps on the ladder,

He grips the hose tight,

He isn’t sure if this will be his last night,

The smoke is thick,

He pushes through,

He has a wife and family to go home to,

He has two little children who he wouldn’t want to make them cry,

If Daddy didn’t tuck them in and say “ Goodnight”,

His radio goes off and gives them the signal,

The hose blasts out water,

Ten times more than a sprinkler,

Three men are behind him,

Making sure he’s alright,

They hold on the hose so very tight,

The fire is out,

But yet he says,

If I were to die tonight,

I’d be proud,

I’d be with my brothers,

Way up there,

I am a firefighter,

I have a family,

I am proud to serve my city,

Angels are always watching me,

If they chose to take me home,

I know I’d be with my family.
